    Like a prehistoric mosquito filled with dinosaur blood and encased in amber, Jurassic Park contains all the essential DNA of its modern-day offspring, Jurassic World.

    And just as director Colin Trevorrow’s blockbuster reboot drew inspiration from Park in ways big and small, so it seems will the Jurassic World sequel. Trevorrow, who is co-writing and executive producing the sequel, said in a recent episode of the Jurassic Cast Podcast that the follow-up also has its foundation in the 1993 original.

    “Jurassic World is all based on Ian Malcolm’s quote,” Trevorrow said, referring to the black-clad chaos theoretician played by Jeff Goldblum. “It’s, ‘You stood on the shoulders of geniuses to accomplish something as fast as you could, and before you knew what you had, you patented it, you packaged it, slapped it on a plastic lunchbox, and now you want to sell it.’ That to me is Jurassic World. That’s why I had all the product placement, that’s what it was.”

    For Jurassic World 2, Trevorrow and writing partner Derek Connolly turned to a line from Park paleontologist Alan Grant (Sam Neill). As Trevorrow paraphrased, “Dinosaurs and man, separated by 65 million years of evolution, have been thrown back into the mix together. How can we know what to expect?”

    Trevorrow went on to say that the sequel, which won’t be actually called Jurassic World 2, will “get to be a different kind of film. I feel like the audience has given us permission, to a certain extent, to take this to the next level.”

    He continued, “I don’t necessarily mean in scale. I feel very strongly that it’s not about more dinosaurs or bigger and better dinosaurs. It’s about using this as a starting point for a much larger story about our relationship with these animals, and with animals in general, and the dynamic created by bringing them back to life.”
